advent: all things new

New Years is coming. A little less than two weeks away and with Christmas in between, it’ll be here before you know it.

New Years

A new year….

2014

Just as tomorrow is a new day…

And next week is a new week…

Many people seek to start things over when New Year’s rolls around – a new diet, new workout regimen, new set of goals, maybe even a new addition to the family.

Our culture teaches us to think that if only  we could start over without making a mess, we would succeed.

There is hope, bred by the stack of self-help books and enlightenment novels we read and financial experts on Wall Street. We reach for it. We want to find the answers for ourselves.

Yet, once we make that first mistake (and we always do – we are not perfect creatures), that great hope suddenly dissipates and is replaced with imperfection and great feelings of guilt, which some of us eat our way through.

Why does this happen?

Sin

Sin provides a great stumbling block in this imperfect world.

It gets in the way.

It shoves us back to ground 0, or at least it seems that way.

And just when we’ve think we’ve made progress, we take two steps back…or so it seems.

But we have hope.

Christ came to make all things new.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old is gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5.17

An encounter with Jesus never leaves a person unchanged. The old that passes away is your sin. The new — is the new creation he is creating within you, one moment at a time.

We change when we make the choice to follow Jesus. Old values, ideas, plans, loves, desires and beliefs vanish over time as we continue to grow in his grace and love. He gives you new desires and they match up with his will.

I pray that this Christmas, you will encounter him. Invite him in. And forever be changed.
