The Good Shepherd

For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 1 Peter 2:25

Have you ever seen a flock of sheep? They tend to simply wander about and follow each other. If it weren’t for the guiding hand of a shepherd, individual sheep can end up far away from the rest of the flock and find themselves in great danger.

In his prophecy of the suffering servant, Isaiah tells us that we are like sheep that have gone astray (Isaiah 53:6). Like sheep, we too are prone to wander about aimlessly, with no real sense of direction. We sin and lose our way; our focus strays from the road less traveled, and we find ourselves ensnared with danger coming at us from all sides (debts, addictions, illness, hostility, etc).

Jesus is our Shepherd. He made reference to this in John 10:11-12 (I am the Good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep.)

He was conversing with a group of Pharisees and revealed Himself as the long awaited Shepherd-King calling His sheep into the fold; a fold that can only be accessed by one Door. Given the Pharisees’ failure to be the shepherds who would shelter, care for, and guide the once-blind man, Jesus now proves Himself to be the true Shepherd with sheep that will hear His voice and follow without hesitation.

Our Savior is the one who protects and guides us. He is the one who restores us when we fall and find ourselves far from His presence. He is concerned with the smallest details of our lives and knows each of us intimately (deeper and better than anyone ever can or will).

Jesus promises that all who hear His voice as the Good Shepherd and come to Him will be saved and protected in His fold. His sheep hear His voice and follow moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day. Ask the Lord to let you hear His voice clearly, and if you are not in His fold, enter by placing your trust in Christ alone.
